Scripture: John 8: 39-59
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” 48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?” 49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” 52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” 54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” 57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
Preface:
"Knowing yourself" is a "mystery" to humans. Do you know yourself? How do you know yourself?
After becoming a Christian, we will take some time to examine ourselves. With the help of the Holy Spirit and the guidance of God's Word, you will often find yourself surprised by yourself.
A person's life is a process of constantly knowing oneself, knowing the world, and knowing God. Lack of any point will lead to tragedies in this life and in the next life.
Sinners are sinners in two ways: First, they don't know themselves. Second, they don't know God.
John 8:39-59 remind us: If we do not know God, we will lose the opportunity to know ourselves and the chance to be saved, and we will lose God and ourselves forever.
Focus Points:
1. Knowing yourself, admit what you think you know is wrong
(1) You think you are descendants of Abraham, but you do not do what Abraham did (V39-40)
(2) You think that God is the father, but you don't love the son God sent. (V41-44)
(3) You think you listen to God, but you don't agree with God. (V45-47)
The wrong self-knowledge leads to the mistake of knowing God.
The great Reformer Calvin once said: "We cannot know ourselves without knowing God. Without knowing ourselves, we cannot know God."
It is precisely because the Jews do not know themselves that they cannot truly know God. They think that their father is God, but they don't love Jesus, the beloved Son sent by God.
They think they desire the truth, but they do not listen to the truth preached by Jesus Christ, nor do they believe in Jesus Christ, the incarnation of truth.
· Christ, nor do they believe in Jesus Christ, the incarnation of truth.
2. Knowing God and Knowing Jesus: (1) Jesus is the Son of the Father, not a Samaritan (V49-51)
Jesus is the Son of the Father, the connection between sinners and God the Father. He is the only way to truth and life! If you don't belong to him, no one can go to the Father.
(2) Jesus is the God of Abraham, not possessed by demons (V52-55)
(3) Jesus is the "I am" God, not a lunatic (V56-58)
Jesus is God "I am". Here I, in Greek, means a name "I am", which is God's name for himself. The title "I AM" teaches us three points of the divinity of Jesus: self-existence, immutability, and omnipotence.
First, the self-existence of Christ. The creation is a dependent existence; only God is independent and free.
Second, his immutability. Jesus is "Today, yesterday, and forever, all the same."
Third, his omnipotence.
3. Knowing God, the eternal Christ is our comfort
Jesus revealed to everyone that he is the eternal God. How important is it to know an eternal God as a finite person? (1) knowing that Christ is eternal, then the life of all living creatures is guaranteed, "everything is born of him." (2) because Christ is eternal, then everyone has hope. (3) knowing that Christ is eternal, then we have an eternal friend. (4) knowing that Christ is eternal, even though his kingdom is not coming, it will certainly come.
4. The Killing of Jesus: The Jews' Response to Jesus (V59)
Jesus just told the Jews the truth they didn't know. The results of it? They stoned him.
Why did Christ still tell them the truth? Because God is love, He doesn't treat people with the punishment we deserve. God loves sinners, and He longs for them to repent and be saved, even risking his life to tell them the good news of salvation.
The Lord Jesus Christ has triumphed. He abolished Satan's tricks on the cross and completely defeated Satan's power. All who are in Christ have been saved by him, and he has been victorious.
Conclusion:
Jesus revealed that he was the God worshipped by Abraham. Jesus revealed that he was the Son of God. He did not ask for his own glory. Jesus revealed that he is the truth. If a person obeys his way, he will never see death.
The late theologian Buck (JI Packer) said in the book "Knowing God": "All my knowledge of God depends on His prolonged and active knowledge of me. I know God because He first knows me and continues to know me. I. God knows me as a friend and loves me; his eyes will never leave me, and his attention will never turn away from me..."
Only by knowing Jesus Christ can we truly know ourselves. The Holy Spirit gives us the ability to recognize ourselves. With fellowship and church life with brothers and sisters, we will grow in knowing God and ourselves.
The Jews did not respond correctly to the revelation of Jesus Christ and lost eternal life. How about you today? How to respond?
Don't miss the opportunity to know God, know yourself, know the world, and enter eternal life!
