Scripture: John 12: 12-19
12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”
14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”c
16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
Theme: Jesus is the King! He is worthy of your worship, and worthy of your trust.
Focus Points: David's descendant entered the city of David, but entered in a humble way.
1. The king proclaimed by the people
The king declared by the people was a king of Israel. The Israelites longed for an Israeli king to rule them and lead them to defeat the Roman Empire. However, Jesus came not to be the king of Israel, but to be the king of the whole earth.
(1) King-Christ-Messiah is the same word.
(2) The Gospel of John always implies that Jesus Christ is the King.
(3) When Jesus entered the city, Jerusalem was very crowded, which paved the way for the shock when Jesus entered Jerusalem.
(4) Palm branches are a symbol of Israel. "Hosanna" means "praise the Lord".
(5) According to the people's cry, we learned that they wanted Jesus to be the king of Israel.
(6) Jesus is the king. This is not a story, but a fact.
(7) Where the king goes, it is a threat to another king.
(8) As people of King Jesus, we will also feel pressure in the world.
(9) The confrontation between kings means war. But our Lord has already triumphed.
2. Wonders seen by the people
Focus: young donkey
Explanation: This fulfills the prophecy of Zechariah chapter 9 verse 9. King Jesus entered Jerusalem in a humble manner. He has served everyone in such a humble manner throughout his life, especially those who are lost.
3. Wonders that the people did not see
The people only saw the scenery when Jesus entered the city, but never thought that the king was not coming to conquer, but to offer himself.
The book of Zechariah shows us the complete prophecy about the King Jesus. We are standing in the 21st century today. After Jesus was resurrected and ascended to heaven, we understood the meaning of these prophecies together with Jesus' disciples.
Jesus Christ will come again as the king. On that day, we will still hear the familiar cry: Hosanna, he who comes in the name of the Lord should be blessed.
